CONSULTING SERVICES

As a consultant interpreter, I use my experience in conference logistics to assist you in determining exactly what you need for your event. I will organize a team of interpreters, selecting those best qualified from among my wide network of colleagues across Canada, based on language combinations and expertise. I will serve as your link with the team so you only need to deal with a single, efficient point of contact throughout your event planning and execution.

I work with a number of reliable equipment providers and qualified technicians offering all types of services for in-person and online interpreting, from soundproof booths and mobile receivers to virtual event platforms. Since I know exactly what questions to ask, I act as an effective liaison and streamline the technical services contracting process for you.

I can put together a team to provide any combination of English, French and Spanish. Other languages may be available upon request.

CONFERENCE INTERPRETING MODES

One of the first things I will determine with you is the mode of interpretation that is best suited to your event. This will depend on its format.

Simultaneous interpreting

Most events require simultaneous interpretation, which is when the interpreter speaks at the same time as the presenter and clients can listen with the help of a system of microphones, soundproof booths and headsets. Attendees can follow along and participate in conversation without delay, regardless of how many languages are being spoken.

Simultaneous interpreting is used for everything from large events with several languages, to bilingual meetings with just a few participants, including conferences, talks, board meetings, workshops, trainings, business meetings and many other types of gatherings.

Consecutive interpreting

There are several instances where consecutive may be more appropriate than simultaneous interpreting. This is usually the case when booths and headsets are undesirable, perhaps because you are working with an intimate setting or a small venue. Press conferences, events with a single speaker, or a brief period of speeches at an inauguration are some specific examples of formats that could be better suited to consecutive.

Depending on your event, either short or long consecutive may be used. Short consecutive serves to facilitate communication between parties in a back-and-forth conversation. In long consecutive, interpreters use special note-taking skills and memory training to deliver a speech in another language immediately after the speaker has finished. Interpreters can take notes for up to ten minutes before the speaker pauses to allow them to deliver a faithful rendition of what they’ve just said.

Consecutive interpreting requires no equipment, apart from any microphones you may already intend to use if the size of your venue and audience merits them.

Whispered interpreting

In this mode, the interpreter provides simultaneous interpretation by speaking quietly to a maximum of two listeners. Whispered interpreting may be used alone or in combination with consecutive interpreting: if a listener chooses to take the floor, the interpreter may switch to consecutive to relay their message to the wider group. No equipment is required for this mode of interpreting.

Mobile interpreting

If you are planning a site visit or other kind of event in which your participants will need to move around from place to place, there is a good chance I will recommend you use an infoport system for simultaneous interpretation. Using lightweight microphones, radio transmitters and headsets, the whole group of speakers, listeners and interpreters can move together from one location to the next with interpretation provided all along the way. Occasionally, this system can also be used for intimate settings with no space for a booth, when there is no time for consecutive and when there are too many listeners for whispered interpreting to be an option.

DISTANCE INTERPRETING

If you are planning a virtual event, interpreting services can be provided online with interpreters working from their own studios. I can arrange technical services if you require them, and if you have your own technician, I will work with them to ensure adequate sound and other conditions are provided to allow for high-quality service. I have extensive experience using a variety of platforms for interpretation, including Zoom, Interactio, Webswitcher, VoiceBoxer and Interprefy, as well as Teams and conference calling, and can adapt to other platforms you may wish to use.

CONFIDENTIALITY

While there is a myriad of reasons to use human interpreters rather than an AI alternative, the most compelling for many clients is confidentiality. I and the interpreters I hire are bound by the AIIC code of ethics, which stipulates that all information disclosed in the course of the practice of our profession at any gathering not open to the public is to be held in the utmost secrecy.
